The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) presented two $100,000 Clinical Investigator Awards (CIAs) in September, including the second CIA in Breast Cancer Research, funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
The recipients of the awards, designed to promote patient-oriented research through the training of surgical oncologists in clinical and translational science, include:
-
Funda Meric-Bernstam, MD, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, was awarded the CIA in Breast Cancer Research for her research study: "Biomarker Assessment for P13K/m TOR-Targeted Breast Cancer Therapy."
-
Nita Ahuja, MD, FACS, Johns Hopkins University, received a CIA supported by a grant from AstraZeneca for her research study: "Developing Epigenetic Staging and Therapy for Colorectal Cancer."
The awards are for two years ($50,000/year), commencing October 1, 2009.
The SSO expresses its appreciation to its partners in this program—AstraZeneca and Susan G. Komen for the Cure ®—for their assistance in funding these awards.
The SSO plans to present its next round of Clinical Investigator Awards in Spring 2010. Research proposals are being accepted through December 18, 2009, for consideration.
