Society of Surgical Oncology

SSO-Approved Surgical Oncology Training Programs

The Society of Surgical Oncology is dedicated to providing the highest level of cancer education to those who participate in SSO programs. Beginning in the 1970s, the Society defined guidelines for Surgical Oncology Fellowships and began to approve qualified programs. Today, there are 19 approved programs across the United States.

The objective of the programs is to expand the basic surgical knowledge and experience obtained during residency to develop skilled surgeon-investigators who, in turn, will become recognized experts in the field of Surgical Oncology. You can obtain a detailed description of the SSO requirements for surgical oncology training.

The descriptions of the SSO-approved programs should serve as a guide to your fellowship selections. Residents seeking a training position in surgical oncology at one of the participating institutions should follow the instructions outlined in Instructions/Deadline Dates for Surgical Oncology Match.

Please note, it is best to begin the application process about one year before your anticipated date of entry into the fellowship. If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Karen L. Oster, Director of Training Programs, at karenoster@surgonc.org.

DISCLAIMER: The surgical oncology training programs described have been reviewed by the Society of Surgical Oncology and have met the criteria necessary to be considered an approved SSO Training Program. Please note, however, that the information listed for each program was provided by the individual training program director and has not been verified by the SSO.
