European Society of Surgical Oncology

ESSO Group
Joint Meeting between the SSO & ESSO at SSO 2016 in Boston.

The European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) supports its members in advancing the science and practice of surgical oncology for the benefit of cancer patients through a range of activities including education, research and leadership in multidisciplinary care.

By facilitating the dissemination of knowledge and expertise, ESSO strives to ensure that the highest possible standard of surgical treatment is available to cancer patients throughout Europe.

In 2013, ESSO developed a Core Curriculum for the specialist training of surgical oncology within Europe to help guide surgeons in enhancing the requite levels of knowledge in surgical oncology. This acts as a reference-tool for the EBSQ examination in surgical oncology organised in partnership with the European Board of Surgery of the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists).

In 2016 the SSO/ESSO Global Curriculum was developed by a Joint Global Curriculum Task Force. The Task Force was a collaboration between the SSO and ESSO, utilizing each societies’ curriculums to create a basic flexible framework for surgical oncology worldwide.

ESSO provides the European Surgical Oncology community with a wide range of educational opportunities and initiatives in line with its core curriculum. These include basic and advanced courses and masterclasses, training and research fellowships, congress bursaries and international exchange programs.

Through its scientific Journal, EJSO-the Journal of Cancer Surgery, ESSO aims to educate and inform about the many subspecialty disciplines of cancer surgery.

Moreover, the society aims to optimize the clinical management of cancer patients through multidisciplinary collaboration. ESSO is highly committed to the training of cancer surgeons and promotes the development of guidelines to foster best practice in cancer surgery. It also seeks to advance education and support basic and clinical research in oncology.

ESSO hosts an annual congress located throughout Europe where leading experts convene to discuss the latest advancements in surgical oncology. All ESSO members enjoy preferential registration rates for ESSO congresses and educational activities.
