LOS ANGELES - Dr. James Steven Economou, [SSO President, 2011-2012] a professor of surgery at UCLA, has been appointed the new vice chancellor for research. His appointment became effective July 1.

Economou undertook the first gene therapy trial on the West Coast, founded and led the UCLA Human Gene Medicine Program for 15 years, and has served as deputy director of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2002.

In announcing his appointment August 4, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh said in a letter to campus leaders that he appreciated Dr. Economou's willingness to take on this critical position. "I also am deeply grateful to Roberto Peccei for his dedicated service as vice chancellor since October 2000," Waugh said. "During Vice Chancellor Peccei's tenure, UCLA achieved unprecedented growth in research productivity and funding, and in 2009-10 broke the $1 billion mark for research grant and contract awards."
