Vow to dying brother drives Grand Rapids surgeon's discovery to help colon cancer patients

The colon cancer research study [SSO member] Dr. Larry McCahill undertook had a few factors working against it.

It lacked the razzle-dazzle appeal of a new drug - not to mention the promotional push of a major drug company. And enrolling patients in the clinical trial moved slowly because they had to meet extremely specific criteria. But a powerful personal commitment spurred McCahill to see it through.

"This was especially important to me because my brother Ray died of colon cancer," said McCahill, a surgical oncologist at Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary's Health Care. "I had really vowed to get this study finished."
