Roswell Park Cancer Institute

Buffalo, New York

Program Director: Jessica S. Young, MD

Roswell Park buildingAs a free-standing NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Roswell Park provides a comprehensive program for training in breast oncology. Fellows spend one year developing a fundamental background in all aspects of breast disease and breast oncology. The fellowship is oriented around in-depth program rotations of breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, breast imaging, experiences in community outreach and disparities research, cancer genetics, patient navigation, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and others. There are multiple opportunities for partnerships with the cancer prevention department, including experiences in community outreach and disparities research. In addition, the fellow is integrated into the surgical oncology training program including a comprehensive didactic course that provides fundamental knowledge on tumor biology and genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, radiation principles, research protocol development, pain management, and end-of-life issues.

Multidisciplinary and Collaborative Environment

The breast fellowship at Roswell Park is conducted within the multidisciplinary breast program including specialists from all relevant medical and other disciplines. Because the Fellows work only in a single location, they have daily contact with leaders of each of the services and throughout the year develop strong relationships through conferences and patient care. All patients are seen in a single multidisciplinary clinic that includes medical and surgical oncology services. This program is adjacent to the breast imaging center. The program maintains a regular multidisciplinary conference as well as weekly journal clubs and other educational activities.

Program Curriculum

The multidisciplinary model provides the opportunity to learn from clinicians and scientists and solidifies understanding of the multidisciplinary care of cancer. Fellows are assigned to clinical rotations centered on fellow education and not on service. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in the teaching of general surgery residents and medical students. There are many research opportunities including the availability of comprehensive treatment information with follow-up on all patients treated in the breast program for the last 20 years, with linkage to available biospecimens.

Eligibility for Fellowship

Applicants must have completed residency training in general surgery and must be board eligible or board certified with the American Board of Surgery.  Interested candidates should apply via the Society of Surgical Oncology. The applicant must be eligible to obtain a license to practice medicine in New York State.
