Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), part of the Allegheny Health Network, is a 661-bed academic medical center offering a wide array of medical and surgical services to Pittsburgh and surrounding five-state area. The Allegheny Cancer Center at Allegheny General Hospital is a five-story building dedicating 100,000 square feet to providing the state of the art, high quality care to patients and families confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The Allegheny Breast Program collectively performs over 40,000 mammograms and treats over 300 breast cancers per year.  Approximately 6,000 patients are seen by breast physicians yearly.

About the Program

The Breast Surgical Fellowship Program is a comprehensive breast care program with recent National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) accredited Breast Program is based in the Cancer Center and managed by the Division of Breast Surgical Oncology. Breast surgical patients are seen one of several fully-equipped state of the art Breast Centers, facilitating a patient-centered multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of benign and malignant breast disease.  The program is unique in its ability to have the fellow operate in both ambulatory and hospital operating room environments. The Breast Program is actively involved in clinical trials of the NRG Oncology cooperate group (NSABP, RTOG, and GOG) and Alliance clinical trial groups. Previous fellows have presented at national meetings and published in peer review journals.

A one-year Interdisciplinary Breast Surgery Fellowship is offered to qualified applicants. The program is intended for recently graduated surgeons wishing to pursue careers in academic breast surgical oncology with a focus on clinical care and research specific to breast cancer.

Clinical Rotations

The Fellow will participate in focused rotations in Breast Surgical Oncology, Breast Imaging, Pathology, Reconstructive Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, Psychosocial Oncology, and Genetic Counseling. The Fellow will participate in scheduled didactic lectures and also attend and present at weekly multi-disciplinary conferences, including Breast Conference and Tumor Board. Frequent fellow/faculty evaluations and director meetings are attended to monitor the fellow’s progress.  Additional time is spent learning about clinical trials and their management through meetings at the NRG/NSABP Operations Office in Pittsburgh.

Clinical Trials

The National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) headquarters are located on the AGH campus. This provides a unique opportunity for the Fellow to participate as a member of a protocol team responsible for the development and ongoing management of a national clinical trial in breast cancer. Fellows will have the opportunity to submit abstracts for national presentation, as well as manuscript submission, and IRB protocol submission.

The graduating Fellow will gain significant knowledge and skills in the pathology and genetics of benign and malignant breast disease, screening and detection techniques, breast surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, clinical trial design and analysis while working closely with a nationally and internationally respected faculty.


The program is located in the city of Pittsburgh which has a vibrant cultural center with performing arts and museums, as well as many parks for outdoor activities such as walking trails, biking trails, and watersports.  Pittsburgh is a sports town which is home for the Pirates, Penguins, Steelers, and Riverhounds as well as a variety of college and high school teams.  It offers a great family atmosphere as well as nightlife.


Prospective fellows must have completed a five-year accredited surgery program and be eligible for a non-restricted Pennsylvania medical licensure.
