Cleveland Clinic Akron General offers a one-year Breast Surgery Oncology Fellowship program, one of only three in the state of Ohio. It is an excellent opportunity to specialize in breast care. This program adheres to the educational guidelines outlined for training programs through the Society of Surgical Oncology. Cleveland Clinic Akron General participates in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP).  Our Breast Health Center is recognized by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons and has received an Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer. Our Breast Imaging Center is designated as a Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

About the Program

The Breast Surgery Oncology Fellow will receive training and research experience at Cleveland Clinic Akron General under the supervision of Mary Murray, MD, Andrew Fenton, MD, and Amanda Mendiola, MD.

Clinical Rotations

This multidisciplinary program provides both surgical and clinical experience with formal rotations in Breast Surgery, Breast Imaging, Genetic Counseling, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Educational experiences are also provided in Palliative Care, Psycho-oncology, Research, and the management of lymphedema.  The educational experience is enhanced by structured didactics which include monthly journal club, breast imaging and textbook reviews as well as a weekly pre-surgical conference which involves a discussion of the management and plan for patients diagnosed with breast disease or breast cancer and who are scheduled for surgery.

Eligibility

The Breast Surgery Oncology Fellowship is open to candidates who have completed a five-year accredited Surgery program, who are board certified or eligible for board certification in Surgery, and who are eligible for Ohio medical licensure.  The Cleveland Clinic Akron General participates in the SSO Fellowship match.  The application, required materials and interview timeline can be found on their website.
