Allegheny General Hospital building

The Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is a large, multi-hospital, premiere health system in western PA. Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is the flagship hospital of our network. AGH is a 661-bed academic medical center offering a wide array of medical and surgical services to Pittsburgh and surrounding five-state area. The brand-new Allegheny Cancer Center at AGH is five-story building dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to patients and families confronted with a cancer diagnosis. Additional hospital sites include the long-standing West Penn Hospital and the brand-new Wexford Hospital. The AHN Breast Program collectively performs over 40,000 mammograms and treats over 400 breast cancers per year. Approximately 6,000 patients are seen by breast physicians yearly.

About the Program

Our AHN Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship is a comprehensive breast care program with recent National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) accreditation for its clinical sites. Breast surgical patients are seen at one of several fully-equipped state-of-the-art Breast Centers, facilitating a patient-centered and multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of benign and malignant breast disease. Our program is unique in its ability to have the Fellow operate in both ambulatory and hospital operating room environments with a dedicated team of fellowship-trained breast surgeons. Our Breast Program is actively involved in clinical trials of the NRG Oncology cooperate group (NSABP, RTOG, and GOG), Alliance, and ECOG-ACRIN clinical trial groups. Our fellows have presented annually at national meetings and have also published their work in peer-review journals.

A one-year Interdisciplinary Breast Surgery Fellowship is offered to qualified applicants. Our program is intended for recently-graduated surgeons wishing to pursue careers in academic or community breast surgical oncology, with a focus on clinical care and research.

Clinical Rotations

The Fellow will participate in focused rotations in Breast Surgical Oncology, Breast Imaging, Pathology, Reconstructive Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, Psychosocial Oncology, and Genetic Counseling. The Fellow will participate in scheduled didactic lectures with faculty, journal clubs, and also attend and present at a weekly system-wide multi-disciplinary tumor board conferences. Frequent fellow/faculty evaluations and director meetings are attended to monitor the fellow’s progress. Additional time is spent learning about clinical trials and their management.

The graduating Fellow will gain significant knowledge and skills in the pathology and genetics of benign and malignant breast disease, screening and detection techniques, breast surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and clinical trial design and analysis while working closely with our nationally and internationally respected faculty. Additional community outreach opportunities exist as well for screening and prevention.

Research

There is initial dedicated time for the Fellow to learn the complexities involved with clinical research. AHN has a full Breast Tumor Registry database which the Fellow has access to for their research project. The Fellow has the opportunity for involvement with ongoing surgical trials. Fellows will have the opportunity to submit abstracts for national presentation, as well as manuscript submission, and IRB protocol submission. Additionally, AHN has networking opportunities with the adjacent National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) headquarters.

Location

Our program is located in the historic city of Pittsburgh, PA, which has a vibrant cultural center with performing arts and museums, as well as many parks for outdoor activities such as walking trails, biking trails, and watersports. Pittsburgh is a sports town and is home to the Pirates, Penguins, Steelers, and Riverhounds as well as a variety of college and high school teams. It offers a great family atmosphere as well as a vibrant nightlife.

Eligibility

Prospective fellows must have completed a five-year accredited surgery program and be eligible for a non-restricted Pennsylvania medical licensure.
