Baylor Scott & White Health in Dallas is a 1000 bed hospital with 64 operating rooms where more than 40,000 surgical procedures are annually performed.

The Breast Oncology Fellowship was established over 20 years ago. Approximately 700 new cancers of the breast are treated at the Medical Center each year.

The Baylor-Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center serves to coordinate the multidisciplinary activities involved in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients. The Breast Imaging Center is part of the Baylor-Sammons Cancer Center and performs over 50,000 screening mammograms yearly. The Center offers a wide variety of services including screening and diagnostic mammography, digital mammography, stereotactic needle biopsy, breast disease treatment, education, genetic counseling and multi-disciplinary consultation.

Clinical Rotations

The educational goals of the fellowship include breast imaging, breast surgery, community service and outreach, genetics, medical oncology, pathology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, psycho-oncology, radiation oncology, and research. The breast surgical oncology fellowship is flexible to include breast surgery service, medical oncology, mammography, radiation oncology, surgical pathology, plastic surgery (optional), and clinical research. During the mammography rotation, there is experience gained in sonographic-guided breast biopsies as well as stereotactic breast biopsies. There are five full-time physician mammographers. An effort is made to adapt the rotation to the particular needs of the individual. Psychosocial support for all cancer patients is available in the Cvetko Center, located in the Cancer Center. Fellows are encouraged to participate in these groups.

Meetings and Conferences

The fellow is expected to participate in investigative studies during their tenure of appointment. Breast Site Tumor Conferences are held twice each month and they are attended by staff members of all disciplines as well as residents and fellows. The fellow is expected to prepare Journal Club at least twice monthly relating to breast diseases. Presentations are encouraged at local, regional, and national meetings and publications resulting from these presentations are expected and encouraged.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment to the Seeger Surgical Oncology Fellowship, the candidate must have completed a general surgery residency, including a chief residency year, in an accredited program in the United States or Canada. The individual chosen for this appointment must be eligible to take the qualifying examination of the American Board of Surgery by the time this fellowship is begun.
