Training Program Director: Mark Cripe, DO, FACOS

Grant Medical Center building

OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, offers a one-year Breast Surgery Fellowship to prepare our fellows for a lifelong career in the diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions. The fellowship emphasizes short time detection to diagnosis for our patients of benign and malignant diseases. Our fellows are involved throughout all aspects of patient care and treatment alongside our expert physicians as well as assuming progressive responsibility in the breast clinic, seeing on an average 50 patients per week. Nationally we have been recognized for Breast Health Services in the Top 100 Hospitals. The Fellowship was one of the first to be offered at a community institution and our former fellows are currently practicing in breast-exclusive practices.

Facility and Program

OhioHealth Grant Medical Center is a 640-bed community institution which draws from a forty-six county radius in Central Ohio. There is a strong Breast Health Services Program at the institution which emphasizes short time from detection to diagnosis for breast patients, weekly multidisciplinary breast pretreatment conferences, and Central Ohio’s only one-stop second opinion clinic for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Nationally, we have been recognized in the Top 100 Hospitals for Breast Health Services. OhioHealth Grant Medical Center physicians are members of SWOG, RTOG, NSABP and our patients have access to the latest National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials. The number of patients enrolled in clinical trials is triple the national average.

Rotations

The Fellowship includes surgical and office experience with Fellowship-trained Surgical Oncologists. During the four surgical rotation months, the Fellow attends all office hours and surgeries of the designated surgeon(s). Additional rotations include Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, Pathology, and Genetic Counseling. There is a one-month elective time and one month to complete research and attend national meetings. Funding is available to offset the costs of attending selected national meetings and courses. Stereotactic biopsy and ultrasound courses are encouraged.

Research, Publication, and Presentation

It is the program’s expectation that the Fellow performs clinical research, prepares a manuscript suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and presents at a national meeting.

Meetings and Conferences

The Fellow is expected to prepare and present cases at weekly breast tumor board conferences, organize monthly journal club, attend monthly second opinion, genetics clinics and high risk and participate in community education lectures. The Fellow is also an integral part of the teaching program of medical students and residents.

The Breast Fellowship at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center is just one part of our institution’s commitment to state-of-the-art breast cancer treatment. A Fellow who completes the program will not only be expertly skilled in the multidisciplinary approach to breast conditions but also in the management of a dedicated breast program.

Eligibility

This Fellowship is available to candidates who have completed residency and are Board-Eligible General Surgeons. Other disciplines will be considered on an individual basis.
