About the Program

The University of Kansas is an NCI-Designated Cancer Center and CoC Accredited Cancer Center serving as a tertiary referral center for patients across the state of Kansas as well as Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. Our mission is “to improve the quality of life and health of those we serve through excellence in surgical care, education and research.” Our team cares for around 1200 breast cancer patients per year, of which >94% undergo breast-specific operations. Fellows will rotate at the Women’s Cancer Center (opened June 2018, primary location) which includes breast imaging; breast surgery clinic; and multidisciplinary clinic along with operating rooms and in-patient unit for post-operative patients. Additional sites include Westwood Cancer Center as well as Overland Park Cancer Center for multidisciplinary exposure (non-operative locations), both of which are within 5-10 miles of the Women’s Cancer Center.

Our Surgeons and Multidisciplinary Faculty

The multidisciplinary faculty involved in fellow education include 33 physicians who are part of our breast patient care team. These individuals practice academic-level medicine in both academic and community practice settings, ensuring the highest level of care for our patients and the best education for our fellows.

Breast Surgery is a division under the Department of General Surgery, with Division Chief Dr. Jamie Wagner (program director) leading the team. The four surgeons in our division practice 100% breast surgery, with case mix approximately 85% cancer and 15% benign/high-risk diagnoses.

Core Clinical Rotations

  • Breast surgery – 8 months
  • Medical oncology – 1 month
  • Radiation oncology – 1 month
  • Plastic Surgery – 1 month
  • Radiology – 1 month
  • Pathology – 1 month (divided throughout the year)

Planned rotation/experience in breast rehabilitation, palliative medicine, genetics, and psych-oncology are also included in the fellowship schedule on a rotating basis.

Clinical Trials

As an NCI Comprehensive Designated Cancer Center, we participate and lead national trials on a daily basis. KU offers on average 40-50 different breast-specific trials for patients in differing phases of care. KU is a member of NSABP, SWOG, Alliance, and NRG. Monthly Disease Working Group (DWG) is a breast-specific multidisciplinary meeting focusing on currently enrolling and upcoming trials, as well as new trial development. In addition to participating in DWG, our fellows will be exposed to significant patient discussions and enrollment on trials via all multidisciplinary clinics.
