The Comprehensive Breast Care Program at Beaumont Health offers a one-year fellowship in the management of patients with benign and malignant diseases of the breast.
Beaumont Health is composed of three university-affiliated hospitals providing secondary and tertiary care in suburban Detroit. Beaumont is routinely ranked first in the total number of inpatient admissions and second in the number of surgical procedures performed nationally. It has sustained regional and national recognition for clinical excellence, and consistently ranks in U.S. News and World Report‘s top 100 hospitals. The hospital performs more than 65,000 mammograms and treats nearly 1,000 new breast cancers each year, and is credited as one of ten top-accruing sites for NSABP B-32 and NSABP P-01 trials. Beaumont is also recognized as a comprehensive clinical oncology program (CCOP), through the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute.
About the Program
The Breast Fellowship consists of both ambulatory and surgical experience with supervised incremental clinical responsibility. Fellows spend five months on the breast surgery service which includes plastic and reconstructive surgery. Additional one-month rotations include: senology (evaluation of women with non-surgical breast complaints), high-risk and survivor’s programs, medical oncology, breast cancer genetics, radiation oncology, breast imaging, and pathology. Additional months are available for elective endeavors including interventional breast imaging, and additional exposure to the clinical areas described above. Beaumont’s clinical volume insures Fellows’ clinical and operative experiences are protected from competition by surgical residents and other rotating trainees.
Meetings and Conferences
Fellows attend and participate in the didactic educational programs. Regularly scheduled conferences include: multidisciplinary breast cancer tumor board, morbidity and mortality conference, oncology lecture series, research lecture series and surgery grand rounds. Monthly conferences include breast journal club and human investigation committee meetings. A statistical analysis and clinical trial design course are offered annually. Financial support is provided to support fellow attendance at a national breast meeting and participate in a breast ultrasound postgraduate course.
Research Opportunities
A wide variety of research opportunities are available and supported by an expansive database maintained by the Comprehensive Breast Care Program and Radiation Oncology. There are also numerous ongoing clinical trials for women with breast disease. Currently, Beaumont Health participates in over twenty clinical trials for women with benign and malignant breast diseases. Ongoing clinical research efforts extensively involve the fellow. The fellow is expected to undertake at least one clinical research project which is translated into a manuscript or presentation at a national meeting.
Eligibility
Applicants should be eligible or certified by the American Board of Surgery and must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Michigan.
