Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Chelsea

Mount Sinai

The Mount Sinai West Breast Center and Blavatnik Family Chelsea Medical Center are both outpatient facilities located within The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai, a National Cancer Institute designated cancer center. The TCI is an integral part of the Mount Sinai Health System, which is one of the largest and most comprehensive healthcare systems in the nation. It is also a vital component of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Each site has its own cancer center, which is dedicated to the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of breast cancer, and fellows in our program benefit from a broad experience at both sites. There are seven dedicated full-time breast surgeons who treat over 1,100 breast cancers per year. Each year, two fellows will be accepted for a one-year fellowship.

About the Program

The overall goal of the one-year training program is to provide specialized training in the multidisciplinary treatment of both benign and malignant breast diseases. This will be accomplished by rotating through the various disciplines involved in the diagnosis and management of breast disease. During the year, the fellows will spend time with various breast surgery teams, and will also gain experience with medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, breast imaging, plastic surgery, psycho-oncology, high-risk and genetics, palliative care, and cancer rehabilitation.

Throughout the training period, the fellows will also gain administrative knowledge of the fundamentals of operating a breast surgery practice and the importance of collaborating with the various disciplines. In addition, there is ample opportunity to participate in community outreach programs.

Meetings and Conferences

The breast surgery fellow is integral to the weekly multidisciplinary breast conference. Working with colleague fellows in breast imaging and pathology, the surgery fellow will present cases and literature reviews and partake in interdisciplinary patient care discussions. Didactic teaching devoted to the fellow includes monthly lectures from faculty in all disciplines, journal clubs and ongoing one on one tutorials.

Research Opportunities

During the year, the fellow will engage in one or two research projects with the goal of presenting at a national meeting and publishing. Our faculty and dedicated breast research team will work with the fellow at the beginning of the year to define such projects and maximize productivity. Recent fellows have presented their work at annual meetings of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Miami Breast Cancer Conference, and the National Consortium of Breast Centers.
