The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology received ACGME accreditation for a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology in January 2017. The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin offers one of the leading academic surgical programs in the nation. We are comprised of more than 170 full-time faculty and an additional 500 full-time staff who support our mission. We are a leader in clinical, basic, and translational research; more than $14 million in federal research funding supports our programs. The Department was recently ranked 7th in NIH Funding to U.S. Surgery Departments in 2022 according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The Department has ranked within the top 25 since 2006.

About the Program
This program accepts one fellow, every other year. This is a two-year fellowship with twenty months of clinical work and four months of dedicated research. The fellow will serve on up to 11 rotations throughout their clinical months, including breast, GI surgical oncology, melanoma, sarcoma, medical oncology, endocrine, colorectal surgery, pathology, and radiation oncology. The fellow will be responsible for seeing patients in clinic, developing care plans, and taking part in surgical cases with faculty supervision. The fellow will serve as an educator for junior residents and medical students in clinic and operative settings and through participation in surgical oncology teaching conferences, and present patients at the many multi-disciplinary tumor boards.

The fellow will train within the UW Carbone Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in Wisconsin.  Our renowned UW Health Breast Center is the only breast center in South Central Wisconsin to have full accreditation from the NAPBC.

In addition to their time at the University of Wisconsin, the fellow will rotate on services at the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital, which is physically attached to the University Hospital and staffed by our divisional faculty. At the Veterans Hospital, the fellow will participate in a unique, 2-year continuity clinic for new and follow-up surgical oncology patients, and the fellow will be primarily responsible for the work up and management of these patients, with supervision by a surgical oncologist.
