The University of Rochester Medical Center, located in Rochester NY, is an integrated academic health center with its main campus encompassing over 4.4 million square feet. The 886-bed Strong Memorial Hospital is Western New York’s largest tertiary care facility, serving as a Level One regional trauma and burn center. Our surgical clinical sites provide 12,000 operative procedures each year. Located approximately one mile from Strong Memorial Hospital is Highland Hospital, where all breast-related surgeries take place. Highland Hospital is home to both nationally-recognized medical programs while retaining the feel of a community hospital with an emphasis on patient comfort and peace of mind.
Comprehensive Breast Care at Pluta (CBCaP) is home to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Institute’s multidisciplinary breast cancer program, providing evaluation and treatment focused on individualized care for all aspects of breast health in a warm and healing environment. CBCaP has been accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) since 2011. Patients have access to screening and diagnostic imaging, image-guided biopsies; surgical consultations, medical oncology consultations, radiation oncology consultations, genetic counseling and testing, risk assessment and management, geriatric oncology, and more clinical trials than any other breast program in the region. Through CBCaP, patients also have access to pathologists who specialize in the diagnosis of breast diseases, reconstructive surgeons, and specially-trained therapists who focus on lymphedema. They also have access to an array of integrative oncology and supportive services including dedicated social workers, yoga, tai chi, massage therapy, art therapy, acupuncture, nutritionists and and healthy cooking classes.
Program Information
The Multidisciplinary Breast Oncology Fellowship is a one-year program accredited by the Society of Surgical Oncology and administered through the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. We accept one fellow per year.
The rotations are designed to provide the opportunity for fellows to learn in-depth knowledge of the diagnostic work-up, pre-operative, operative, and postoperative care for patients with breast disease. Core experiences include surgical oncology, imaging, pathology, plastic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, genetics, psycho-oncology, integrative oncology, community outreach and rehabilitation.
The didactic experiences of the program encompass the breadth of multidisciplinary care with the fellow actively participating in tumor board and other conferences pertinent to current issues in breast care. The fellow receives formal training in quality and patient safety, education and research, and professionalism utilizing various delivery methods to further enhance the curriculum.

Eligibility
The applicant to the Multidisciplinary Breast Oncology Fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center must have completed a general surgery residency program in an accredited program and be eligible or certified from the American Board of Surgery. The applicant must be eligible to obtain a license to practice medicine in New York State. The University of Rochester will sponsor only J1 visas for medical training positions.
