A Global Forum of Cancer Surgeons (GFCS), organized by the Society of Surgical Oncology, convened for the first time on March 17, 2017 at SSO 2017 in Seattle, Washington. Representatives from 10 global oncology societies participated in this forum. As a result of this meeting, a Declaration of Intent, which outlined several objectives to improve surgical care and increase surgical leadership on the global state was published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology in July 2017: GFCS Declaration of Intent
The second GFCS meeting was held on March 22, 2018 at SSO 2018, in Chicago, Illinois. Representatives from 12 countries/regions participated in this forum. Following this meeting, an article entitled, “Global Forum of Cancer Surgeons: A Steady Voice for Cancer Surgeons to Improve Surgical Care for Cancer Patients Globally”, was published in June 2018 in the Annals of Surgical Oncology. This article established that the GFCS “speaks as one voice for all cancer surgeons to guarantee the most cohesive, viable, and vital representation on the global stage.”
The third article, Global Forum of Cancer Surgeons: Perspectives on Barriers to Surgical Care for Cancer Patients and Potential Solutions was released at SSO 2019; it identifies the barriers to surgical care for cancer patients in different countries/regions. Several global oncology societies provided qualitative data to the SSO and Dr. Chandrakanth Are spearheaded this effort. This 2019 article was published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology on March 25.
