Cedars Sinai Medical Center

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a world-renowned, nonprofit academic medical center with approximately 900 licensed beds. The medical center serves Los Angeles and the surrounding area as a major tertiary and quaternary referral center for California and is one of the largest medical centers in the United States.

About the Program

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center offers a two-year ACGME complex surgical oncology fellowship for candidates who have completed an approved general surgery residency and who are Board-eligible or Board-certified. The CGSO Fellowship program is an integrated multidisciplinary program with a major emphasis on surgical oncology training and multidisciplinary care. The trainee participates fully in the evaluation and management of surgical oncology patients and coordination of care with multidisciplinary specialists. The trainee also actively participates in the recruitment of patients for clinical and translational research studies. The goal of the program is to train the fellows to become expert surgeons with a thorough understanding of multidisciplinary management of the complex cancer patient.

Clinical Rotations

The two-year core curriculum comprises 18 months of training in inpatient and outpatient surgical oncology and includes rotations at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, the Angeles Clinic and Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles.  The clinical portion of the program is heavily weighted toward the strengths of the institution, focusing on complex gastrointestinal malignancies, pancreatic and hepatobiliary malignancies, breast cancer, melanoma, head and neck cancer, and foregut malignancies. The trainee also rotates on the medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, and palliative care services. In addition, trainees may perform electives in gynecologic oncology, orthopedic oncology (bone and soft tissue tumors), and thoracic surgery. The program emphasizes coordinated multidisciplinary care which will allow the trainee to be involved in all aspects of patient management.

Meetings and Conferences

There are several weekly conferences in the Department of Surgery, including Grand Rounds, General Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference, General Surgical Oncology Conference, Multidisciplinary Journal Club, multiple disease-specific Tumor boards, and didactic lecture series of topics related to surgical oncology.  New patients are presented at Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards where slides and images are reviewed with multiple attending physicians and multidisciplinary care discussed.  Fellows actively teach residents and medical students on rounds and in weekly fellow-run conferences.

Research, Presentations, and Publications

During dedicated research months, the fellows have the opportunity to select a faculty-mentored project in a wide array of subjects.  Collaborative opportunities are widely available with scientists in the Division of Medical Oncology and the Division of Radiation Oncology as well. The fellow is expected to participate in ongoing clinical research protocols and is encouraged to present his/her research findings at local and national meetings. In addition, the fellow will attend basic science and clinical specialty research seminars.  A course in biostatistics is provided to gain experience in clinical trial methodology, protocol and consent form writing, and data collection.  As part of the instruction in clinical research, fellows assist with the accrual of patients into both institutional and regional/national cooperative group protocols.  Fellows are mentored to finalize projects involving clinical research into presentations at national meetings and publications in peer-reviewed journals.  Fellows are expected to have several manuscripts published or ready for publication prior to completing the fellowship.
