The Yale University interdisciplinary breast surgery fellowship is a one-year clinical fellowship aimed to train future leaders in breast surgical oncology through multidisciplinary education including breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast imaging, pathology, plastic surgery, genetics and high risk, survivorship, and palliative care. Our engaged faculty are committed to world-class patient care, education and research and our program is designed to provide trainees with all the necessary skills needed to become leaders in breast cancer treatment and research. The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven (a beautiful state-of-the-art 15 story facility) is fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), an accrediting body administered by the American College of Surgeons. The Center’s affiliation with Yale Cancer Center makes it the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Northeast to also have the NAPBC accreditation. Yale Cancer Center is a collaboration between nationally and internationally renowned scientists and physicians at Yale School of Medicine and Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. This partnership enables the Center to provide the best approaches for prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment for cancer.

The Program

The fellowship at Yale is designed to train outstanding clinical breast surgeons with a foundation of interdisciplinary breast cancer management through engaged mentorship and sponsorship of promising surgeon leaders. Fellows spend eight months dedicated to breast surgery, with exposure to a rich spectrum of disease, and the complexities of breast surgical oncology and leading reconstructive techniques. In addition, the fellow has protected time on discipline-specific rotations and requirements for research. The discipline-specific rotations include medical oncology, radiation oncology, breast imaging, pathology, plastic surgery, high-risk and genetics, survivorship, physical therapy, and palliative care. The fellow rotates through a myriad of breast oncology specialties; through close collaborations with world-renown faculty, the fellow develops connections to foster lifelong mentorship and sponsorship. The fellow is expected to participate in outreach efforts to leverage the long-standing commitment of Yale New Haven Health to its community.

Educational Conferences

The fellow will participate in multiple teaching conferences throughout the year, aimed at clinical management and research; this includes weekly Multidisciplinary Breast Tumor Board and Breast
Surgery Chart Rounds, bi-monthly Breast Clinical Series lecture series; monthly Journal Club; Weekly Yale Breast Outcomes Group; and divisional and departmental conferences.

Research, Publication, and Presentation

The Yale School of Medicine has extraordinary strength in externally funded research and consistently ranks in the top handful of medical schools receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health. Through support from the program director and other faculty, the fellow will be expected to submit abstracts to key national meetings and present accepted work. The Yale Breast Outcomes Group provides a shared resource for trainees, including PhD-level biostatistical support and access to key national and institutional data (National Cancer Database; SEER-Medicare; MarketScan). Fellows are also able to participate in formal coursework including the Investigative Medicine Program at Yale and grant-writing courses.

Clinical Trials

The fellow will be exposed to clinical and therapeutic trials across the Smilow network, demonstrating a commitment to trial enrollment for the diverse population of patients we serve. This includes cooperative group trials – particularly as Yale is a main member of SWOG and has access to other trials through CTSU. The fellow will also have the opportunity to participate in the design and conduct of pragmatic and implementation trials, if this is of particular interest to them.

Eligibility

One fellowship position is available. This is a one year program. To be eligible, applicants must be BE/BC in General Surgery, able to be licensed in Connecticut, and approved by the Yale Medical Group. Yale is an equal opportunity, affirmative-action employer.
