The ACGME accredited Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program at The Mount Sinai Hospital offers a two-year fellowship position to one highly-qualified physician each academic year. As a fellow, you will develop the technical skills necessary for complex surgical procedures and will understand the multidisciplinary care of cancer patients. Surgical oncologists consider each procedure within the context of an optimal treatment plan that may incorporate chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and/or alternative approaches.
You will gain in-depth exposure to the surgical component of oncological care as well as the opportunity to participate in a clinically busy and academically rigorous unit to obtain clinical research. We are particularly interested in the treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies.
Our fellows graduate with competency in these areas:
- Evaluation, surgical management, and follow-up of patients with a wide range of malignancies within the context of a multidisciplinary cancer team
- Performance of clinical research in surgical oncology, with a proven understanding of study design, methods of data analysis, and presentation of results
- Experience with a wide range of complex surgical procedures (both laparoscopic and open), as well as other core surgical oncology procedures (e.g., sentinel node biopsy for breast cancer and melanoma, radiofrequency ablation of hepatic tumors, wide excision of cutaneous malignancy)
Surgical Simulation Center
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers a Surgical Simulation Center equipped with Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Simulators, Inanimate Models, Web-Based Learning Modules, Fundamentals of Laparoscopic (FLS) Training Boxes, and a Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) GI Mentor.
Mount Sinai Robotic Surgery Training Center
The da Vinci surgical system is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand the surgeon’s capabilities and offer a state-of-the-art minimally invasive option for complex general surgical oncology procedures. Fellows have access to the da Vinci Robot Simulator and are expected to complete our robotics curriculum and achieve certification of da Vinci training during their fellowship.
